Is leaving loved ones, business, and life as you know it really necessary to survive? Sadly, I believe it is the only way. The Blumenthal family was faced with this very situation. With a very successful business and two elderly loved ones, one suffering from cancer the Blumenthal’s had to decide on an already determined fate or a chance on freedom. Leaving Germany would be a very painful, timely, and costly process. To be moved or transferred to a different country is a long, timely, and stressful process, especially during this time of the Holocaust. First you would need to get on the Quota List, In addition to the quota, a foreigner requires an affidavit, a written guarantee from a relative, a friend, or some other acceptable sponsor living in the United States. Lastly a visa would need to be obtained. This document was the actual permission slip to get into the United States. Is it the best choice to leave your life, your friends and especially your nearby relatives? Hoya, Germany is the life and land of the Jewish family and perhaps we should not give up what we hold so dearly so easily.
